for organizations where leaders are relationship-oriented and conflict-averse, and where performance conversations are often delayed or avoided.

Description:
Managing performance is one of the most important, and most avoided, responsibilities of any supervisor. This interactive training is designed for managers and supervisors who care deeply
about their teams and want practical tools to support employee success, even when that means having difficult conversations.  This is not a training about discipline. It is training about leadership that addresses problems early, communicates expectations clearly, and creates a culture where accountability is understood as an act of care rather than a punitive measure. Participants will work through real-world scenarios drawn from local government settings, apply frameworks they can use immediately, and leave with reference tools they can take back to their desks.

Learning Objectives:

• Identify the personal and organizational cost of delaying performance conversations and recognize the patterns that signal avoidance.
• Set and communicate clear, specific, and consistent expectations.
• Deliver constructive feedback in a way that is direct, behavior-focused, and free of character judgments.
• Distinguish between documentable behavior and undocumentable opinion, and apply that distinction to real workplace scenarios.
• Document pre-disciplinary conversations using a structured formula that supports employee improvement and creates a defensible organizational record.
• Understand the purpose and sequence of progressive discipline and apply it consistently across employees and situations.

Participant Expectations:

• Participants are expected to have video camera and microphone capabilities. They must fully participate in small-group breakouts and other interactive group activities as instructed by the trainer.
• To receive credit, the session must be attended for the full duration.
