Tips to Protect Your District’s Vacant Buildings!

The November and December months have seen snow accumulation and temperatures steadily dropping.  With January and February still ahead, there are steps that can be taken to prevent winter losses from occurring.  Here are a few tips related to vacant properties:

  • Empty or blow out any unused pipes that could freeze and crack during the winter. If this cannot be done, set the heat in the building to a safe temperature to prevent freezing.
  • Cover any exposed pipes that may be susceptible to freezing conditions
  • Plan a routine inspection of the vacant property

This fall and winter, we have also seen an increase in vandalism and theft, especially to vacant or less used properties. The theft of copper wiring is all too common right now. Here are some steps your district can take to guard against this type of loss:

  • Inform local police and fire departments of the vacant property.  This is a good step to take for added security awareness.
  • Install security technology and post signs stating that the property is under security surveillance.
  • Maintain landscaping to prevent hiding spaces
  • Keep the area well lit
  • Plan a routine inspection of the property
